What is VET?

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is learning where you develop practical skills that can lead to a career pathway.

What VET gives you

Doing VET subjects as part of VCE, VCE Vocation Major or Victorian Pathways Certificate is like doing TAFE at the same time as year 11 or 12.

Depending on your VET course, you’ll either study at your school or at a nearby TAFE or training provider.

VET subjects:

  • count towards completion of your VCE, VCE VM or VPC
  • give you credit for TAFE or uni courses.

Some VET programs provide a score that contributes to your ATAR, if you're eligible for one.

Choosing VET subjects

More and more schools are offering VET in priority pathways. Check with your school’s careers counsellor to find out what options are available at your school.

VET priority pathways are:

  • health
  • community services and early childhood education
  • building and construction
  • digital media and technologies
  • hospitality
  • engineering
  • automotive
  • agriculture and environment
  • hair and beauty
  • creative industries
  • sport and recreation
  • business.

The best way to make a decision about what subjects to do is to work backwards. Think about what kind of job you want find out what skills or qualifications you’ll need.
