Hundreds of thousands of graduates emerge from universities and TAFEs each year, all looking for work. It’s not enough to just have a qualification. Two things are equally as important:
- Showing that your experience sets you apart from other applicants.
- Working as hard as you can to find the jobs that are out there.
Get more experience
One thing that can make you stand out is experience. If you don't have much, you can always go out and get it.
Some ways to get experience include:
- Graduate recruitment programs - These programs, offered by businesses and governments, provide graduates with paid work and training.
- Volunteering - Volunteering gives you skills and experiences you can use to make your resume even more impressive.
Widen your search
If you're having trouble finding a job, you might need to start looking in different places. Here are some other ways to build on your networks and find the jobs that aren't showing up online.
- Join a professional association – Professional associations offer support to people working in those areas. They're a great way to build your networks. Visit our Industry profiles pages for links to some of the professional associations out there.
- Look for work interstate - If there's no work in your home town or your home state, you might have better luck in another state, or another country.
- Go to career expos - Find out what kind of graduate careers expos are offered at your uni or TAFE. You could also check out the expos at other campuses too.
- Use your networks - Let everyone you know you're looking for work in your field of study and get them to let everyone they know as well.
